So basically, when asked about whether I should give veganism a go, you all collectively clutched your heads and screamed ' NO BEASTIE NO!' and one of you even called me pathetic. Yeah, thanks for that.

So, I guess that's a no on the veggie-muching, then? :)

And Surf Wahine - don't worry too much about my wine intake. I drink two glasses of wine about once every six months - I don't think that's what made me or is keeping me fat!

The only reason I asked is that while bimbling around the Internet I came across a site that said 'If you've been vegetarian, a long term dieter, or addicted to sugar in any way (Ha! I'm three for three), you need plenty of fat and meat to build your body back up. Once you have, you need plenty of veggies and plant matter to nourish yourself.'

I figured that seeing as I've been eating Paleo for nearly 2 years now, that I've probably built my body back up. Now it needs optimal nutrition, which means more plants than I've been eating. And in my 2-glass haze, I naturally took it to the veganism extreme, because Lord knows I don't do dieting by halves. Then I came across Disease Proof - Dr Fuhrman's blogs who advocates a mostly vegan diet and there are people on his site who've dropped massive gobs of weight. I want that too! And...that doesn't make me pathetic.

So anonymous: This is for you -

Anyhoo.

I guess this all stems from the fact that *ARGH!* I'm just frustrated. When I listen to my body and get plenty of protein and fat, I end up with bad intestinal cramps and diarrhoea. When I eat more plant-based, I'm famished all the time. IF doesn't do diddly. When I eat Primal, I can't handle the dairy, raw or not...working out three times a week at the gym hasn't helped...I haven't found what's right for me yet and I'm sick of spinning my wheels.

Those of you who have found a lifestyle that works - REJOICE! You're not pushed to the extreme where veganism is the only thing you haven't tried.

  1. Great to hear that you have decided not to go over to the vegan land. Keep refining your approach, we all end up having different needs.
Oh and here is a funny one for you Beastie and Judith. My epic fail on the question: Last night we went out to dinner and the Rico ordered a bottle of wine. Did I split it with him? Of course I had way too much. So I need you all there to ask me the question of How bad do you want it. Last night the answer was not bad enough to say no thanks.
Go out and do better than me Beastie and Judith!

  2. Just as I have most of the paleo blogs in my rss reader, I have a few veggie blogs. I've been a longtime reader of Disease Proof and occassionally learn something. I enjoy the weight loss profiles but you can tell most are underweight and have bad body composition. Fuhrman advocates a low carb veggie lifestyle which can be fairly hard to stick to. Personally, I've been contemplating a mostly raw fruit & veggie diet to lose weight with the addition of whey protein drinks throught the day to maintain lean body mass. Another idea that a NYTimes food critic employs is called Vegan Before Six where he eats vegan until 6pm or even to alternate days. BTW, another great site by an omnivore (and former atkins dieter)that accentuates fresh farmers market fruits and vegetables is SummerTomato.com. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  3. I'm glad you won't be venturing into vegan land. I often wonder how they ever eat enough protein to feel full. Eat lots of vegs if you want but eat meat too!

I have a very hard time losing weight too, and I can vouch for meal replacement protein shakes as a weight loss strategy if you can bear the tedium and lack of texture. But they are only a temporary measure, you can live on shakes forever.

I have been falling off the wagon lately, (wine is my downfall!) so I need to be asking myself how bad do I want it a bit more often!

  4. As you know I have not had much success as of late. But I would rather eat paleo and be fat than go vegan. I know I am eating healthy and exercising and therefore I am healthy. I don't need a weight on a scale to confirm this for me. Do you think you could just accept your weight and eat for the health benefits??? I totally understand if not because I continue to try.

  5. I can see why you would want to try a vegan diet and I think, why not? I don't believe a vegan diet is sustainable for good health, but as a month cleanse it might help.

  6. If you're really willing to try anything, read Lyle McDonald's "Rapid Fat Loss Handbook"

It's a protein sparing modified fast - very low calories, mostly from very lean protein. Until you get into ketosis, you'll feel lousy, but once you do, it's pretty easy to follow.

Very lean meat, a little fruit and a vast pile of green veggies will get you through it. It's quite a shock for someone coming from the low-carb, primal or paleo world to go so incredibly low in fat, but you learn new cooking techniques, and you get by.

A lot of people use protein shakes, but I find I'm more physically satisfied if I chew my food. I did use shakes with protein powder (egg white) and strawberries a few times though.

  8. hi! I just found your blog and am enjoying the read - you are very funny :) I've been doing paleo for health. Before that I had tried every diet on the planet. Vegan has its positive points, but right now I'm gung ho paleo... anyway check out this link about pathogens (e.g. virus infection) and weight gain: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/?cat=11.
