Yesterday I weighed in at 101, then worked out and had a big, hearty dinner of meatza, made with triple veggies and half the cheese. This morning I weighed in a whole half a kilo heavier.
I'm so angsty about this weightloss thing - I'm so desperate to lose the weight but nothing I try works. I work out 1 - 3 times a week, I've tried high carb vegetarian, low carb neolithic, low carb paleolithic, high carb paleolithic, increasing vegetable intake, all meat intake, you name it, I've done it. But it just won't come off!! And then, just one moderate neolithic meal and BAM! I'm a kilo heavier. After one weekend in the UK eating normal British foods, I gained 3 kilo and nearly 5 weeks later I've only managed to lose 1 kilo of that weight. *insert swearing here*
GAH!
Breathe, Beastie, breathe.
I'm flying back home to New Zealand in late November and I'm so motivated to lose weight so I don't feel stuffed in an airplane seat, immobile, stuck up against the person next to me, stealing an inch of their precious space and not being able to move. In fact I'm so motivated I've even started fasting like a mad thing - but nothing's shifting.
I guess really when it comes down to it, I'm not fasting hardcore enough. I manage about 18 hours, but I really think it's going to take fasts of 48 hours or more - I'm even thinking of maybe even a week.
Do any of you have experience with longer term fasts?
I also think I'm going to have to start walking without fail every day, just for an hour or so. I've actually got like a million podcasts I want to listen to, so it's a good excuse to strap on the Vibrams and get moving!
I'm glad to see you back! I've only done 24 hour fasts so I can't help you there. Have you had your thyroid checked out to see if that is part of the issue? Best wishes
ReplyDeleteIt's good to have you back blogging. I've missed you and your idiosyncratic take on things!
ReplyDeleteIt must be so frustrating that you're not losing, and that you're actually gaining if you deviate even a little. That sucks. The suggestion about getting your thyroid checked is a good one. You never know.
About fasting - worth a try. I'm not great at it and I don't do it these days - too self indulgent. I hafta get back into it. 16 - 18 hours is relatively easy but 24 is a struggle for me. The longest I've managed is 30 hours. I do recommend it though, maybe having dinner and then nothing but fluids (I have one large coffee with a generous splash of cream in the morning, then water only)until dinner the next day. The "fast five" thing, in fact. I did this twice a week for a while.
Or - you could do phase one of the Eades 6 week cure for a while - it's too boring (and constipating!) to do for long. Protein shakes and one low carb meat and salad meal for as long as you can stand it.
Whatever you decide - don't give up!
So sorry about your frustration. I'm in the same spot. Exactly.
ReplyDeleteI turned for a while on the 'paleo' community because all the money makers out there are saying all you need to do is eat paleo, get moderate exercise, and the weight will pour from your body. That is not what has happened after 4 years of effort. What has happened is that I am the same weight I was when I started, and now my body is extremely sensitive to weight gain and is more highly sensitive to allergens than before. After posting what was for me an angry rant, one of the money makers had the gaul to post back that I just wasn't trying hard enough!! Maybe I needed to fast for 2-3 days straight, or maybe I was lying about what I was dong. I was astonished really, because paleo was liberating for it's premise that obesity stems from chemical processes in your body which cause you to crave sugar in its various forms. Once a person had eliminated the sugar, then sugar cravings would disappear and we would be free from obesity. A physical process in the body, not a motivation issue, or any kind of thing related to personality. But then again, the comments come from men who have never been obese or overweight in their lives. Ten pounds on a six foot male does not count as overweight. Those people spewing advice are not experienced in my particular issues- 40 year old female with long term up and down weight fluctuations which has led to insulin resistance, significant chronic stress, perimenopausal, and a single parent. Anyway, I'm sick to death of the money makers and just want to quietly heal myself and enjoy my life without focusing on my weight.
Anyway, I went to a certified Naturopath physician last week. I think she will be very helpful in getting me going. I'm getting tested for actual celiac, which she's sure I have. Not gluten sensitivity, mind you. Actual celiac. She says once I have the results (and if they're positive) then I will have a higher incentive to avoid gluten at all costs. Because like you, I tend to eat the bickie when it's put out because of good manners, even though it's killing me.
The Naturopath also advises me to get my stress under control (again, you're built like me, so stress may be playing a larger role in your life than you think) and has suggested rhodiola. We're also doing tests to rule out hormone problems, including thyroid.
So, once that's done, we're going to work on a paleolithic diet plan with a solid carb allowance, a stress relief plan, and an exercise plan, all of which are going to be realistic to my life situation.
I just let you know this because it's the first time I've felt in control in months, if not a year. It feels great, even though there will be no instant results. I have decided to make a 12 month plan for health and I am in control of that! It's awesome!! I know Netherlands will have Naturopaths as well- perhaps there's one near to you?!
I just knew I couldn't go this alone anymore. I have tried and tried and gotten spotty and short term results, yet I know this way of eating and philosophy is right for me (and all of us). I just need some help at it.
So, for what it's worth, I'm going to try again.
Sorry for my self-indulgent post. What I want to say is I am just like you. And I'm sorry that there's two of us suffering like we are.
Good luck, keep trying, maybe see a naturopath?
Andrea
Hi Beastie,
ReplyDeleteI dropped from a 85 kg to a 70 kg. I'm not a hard-core paleo guy, basically I'm low carb, try to get some vegetables, limiting my omega-6 (home made olive oil based mayo!), getting extra omega-3 and saturated fats, sometimes some fruit, mainly berries and stuff like that in yoghurt (store bought, or home made). I do eat bread from time to time, just because it's so tasty, same with beer... No sweat, I know how to control my health and weight, so if things get out of hand (weight because of the beer and other carbs, canker sores because of omega-3 deficienty) I know what to do.
I do fast, irregulary. For months I only had dinner every night, no breakfast or lunch. Sometimes I ate on monday at 1900, and did not eat 'till 2200 or 2300 the next day, just because it didn't fit my plans to eat earlier because I had late working days, and went wall climbing with friends, and did not have the time to eat. Not that I do a lot of sporting, just a few times a month, basically only when I feel like sporting. Take the stairs to my parents appartement, 9 floors in 30 seconds, some swimming, including a 50+ meters under water, some wall climbing now and then, some (water)skiing few times a year. Just stuff for fun, nothing too serious.
Now I have a small lunch most of the time. I still don't like to have breakfast, but sometimes I take a spoonfull of coconut fat together with some extra multi-vitamins, and recently I bought some coconuts in a toko, that stuff really gives you a feeling of "ok, no food for me now anymore" quite fast. Really filling.
So, for me, and 24 fast is quite ok, just having 1 meal a day. Right now I usually have 1 or 2 meals a day. I never tried a 48 hrs fast, but I don't like to go hungry, but really liked being free from the eat-at-this-and-that-hour thing.
Rammadan is coming up. If you have some friends or colleages that are muslim you could join them in their fasting efforts during rammadan. I did the same for a few days last year.
If you think that you are still getting too much carbs, you could buy some ketostix. I did that in the past, you can check if you are in ketosis as a result of going really low-carb.
I'm quite ok with my 70 kg. Want to do some extra sporting, but I think it shouldn't be too hard. Health is important, nice looks are nice to have, but basically fun is more important.
Hey Ill be in New Zealand from November too!
ReplyDeleteHey Dan! I leave for NZ in late November arrive 2 December - you still there then? We should meet up for a Paleo meal! :)
